Powerups Guide

Powerups decide lives as much as swords

On Sword Fights on the Heights IV, a perfect Illumina means little if you are poisoned at 20 HP with no Medkit, or trapped on a plank with no Touchstone. This page covers every major utility players grab between sword pedestals. Pair it with the Map guide, Swords encyclopedia, and Combat tips.

Medkit

The Medkit is a small white pack with a red cross, classically found near the red portal / medkit stand area.

Effect: On use, your character flashes white, you fully heal, and the Medkit is consumed. Critically, it cures Venomshank poison.

Play notes:

  • Strong players try to hold two Medkits when the map allows—one for poison, one for a second crisis.
  • Do not waste a Medkit at 90 HP because you are nervous; save it for poison or sub-40 fights.
  • After a Venom nick, prioritize Medkit over ego chasing the Venomshank user.

Without Medkits, Darkheart life steal and healing pads become your backup sustain plan.

Battle Armor (200 HP)

Battle Armor looks like a shiny torso brick. Touching it sets your maximum health to 200 (double the default 100) and makes the torso look reflective so others can see you are armored.

Play notes:

  • You can typically benefit once per life even if multiple Armor spawns exist—because it sets max HP to 200 rather than stacking +100 repeatedly.
  • Armor does not delete Venomshank’s value; poison ticks a fraction of max HP, so absolute damage per tick rises with 200 HP.
  • Grab Armor early on strong lives. It turns Illumina trades and Darkheart scrapes in your favor.
  • During buggy event patches, Armor spawners have occasionally failed—see Hunt event and Patch notes if pickups look broken.

Touchstone → Locus

The Touchstone is a reflective green sphere utility. Activate it to teleport to the Locus (saferoom) under the central Ring of Fire.

Effect: Instant relocate to the Locus. The Locus grants a forcefield while you remain inside and hosts the colored portals to major map wings.

Play notes:

  • Loud, distinctive activation sound—experienced players hear escapes.
  • Classic fake-out: jump off an edge, Touchstone mid-fall, and let chasers assume you voided.
  • Always plan your exit portal. The saferoom is safe; the portal mouth often is not.
  • Carry Touchstone whenever you leave the Locus for contested pedestals.

Full portal color routing is on the Map guide.

Shadow Sphere

Shadow Sphere grants temporary invisibility.

Constraints that matter:

  • Unequipping can break invis early.
  • You generally cannot swing a sword while invisible with this sphere—unlike Ghostwalker invis, which is a sword state.
  • Illumina sparkles can still reveal you in range.
  • Cooldown applies after the effect ends.

Play notes: Use Shadow Sphere for repositioning, pedestal snipes, or escaping detection—not as a replacement for Ghostwalker. Classic spawn sits atop the Darkheart mountain cluster near Shadow Sphere’s landmark.

Shield Sphere

Also called the Sphere / Plus Sphere in backpack UI lore. Shield Sphere applies a temporary forcefield that blocks damage for several seconds (community guides often cite ~8s), then enters cooldown.

Play notes:

  • Best habit: pop Shield Sphere as you exit a Locus portal when campers are likely.
  • Darkheart users can still life-steal by hitting forcefielded targets—do not AFK inside a shield next to a Darkheart.
  • Pair with Touchstone for “shield → portal → sword” resets mid-streak.

Jet Boots (removed ~2016)

Jet Boots were a hold-to-fly mobility item with limited fuel. Release to fall; empty fuel mid-air meant a void risk. Combined with Ghostwalker low gravity, they enabled extreme flight paths.

Status: Removed from the classic experience around 2016 (platform breakage and later unobtainable state; community shorthand often says mid-2010s removal). Do not follow outdated guides that treat Jet Boots as a current pickup.

Modern mobility is Illumina fly, Ghostwalker gravity, jump pads / trampolines, and portal routing—not Jet Boots.

Healing pads

Map healing pads restore health on contact. They are slower and more public than a private Medkit click, but they matter when your pack is empty or poison is ticking and no Medkit spawned.

Play notes: Pads are contested social spaces. Approach with a sword out; expect third parties. Pads plus Darkheart can stabilize a disastrous midfight.

Trampolines / jump pads

Trampolines and jump pads launch you vertically (and sometimes awkwardly sideways after physics patches). Ghostwalker’s low gravity multiplies launch height—fun for traversal, dangerous near voids.

Play notes:

  • Use pads to reach Illumina conveyor approaches or escape sticky courtyard fights.
  • Broken pad physics have been patched multiple times historically (including 2020 Quenty-era fixes).
  • Never jump-pad blindly without checking who waits at the landing.

Suggested utility priority on a fresh life

  1. Battle Armor if pathing allows
  2. Medkit (ideally two)
  3. Touchstone
  4. Shield Sphere before hot portal exits
  5. Shadow Sphere only if you have a specific stealth plan
  6. Sword pedestal for the matchup—see Tier List and Matchups

Treat powerups as loadout slots, not scenery. The players who streak are the ones who never leave the Locus empty-handed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does Battle Armor stack if I touch it twice?

Usually no. It sets max health to 200 once per life, so a second touch does not make you a 300 HP tank.

Does Medkit cure Venomshank?

Yes. Medkit full-heals and clears poison. Keep one specifically for Venom pressure.

Can I fight while Shadow Sphere invisible?

Typically no—unequipping or swinging breaks the stealth fantasy. Ghostwalker invisibility is the combat stealth sword instead.

Are Jet Boots still in the game?

No. Jet Boots were removed around 2016 and are not part of the current classic pickup pool.

Why use Shield Sphere if Darkheart can hit forcefields?

Shield still blocks normal sword damage during the window and saves you from portal campers. Just do not idle next to a Darkheart farmer.
