Why matchups matter on the Heights

Raw tier lists tell you what to pick first. Matchups tell you what to hotbar-swap midfight. Classic Sword Fights on the Heights IV is small enough that one wrong blade into a hard counter ends a life: Ice Dagger into Firebrand, Ghostwalker into Illumina sparkles, Darkheart into a Windforce shove off the Ring of Fire.

Use this page with the Swords tier list, the Swords encyclopedia, and Combat tips. Map context—bridges, portals, voids—lives on the Map guide.

Firebrand vs Ice Dagger

Hard counter: A player actively wielding Firebrand cannot be freeze-killed by Ice Dagger.

If you hold Firebrand

  • Keep Firebrand equipped whenever you see a blue dagger user nearby—immunity is equip-based.
  • Use your long reach to poke first on planks and corridors.
  • Do not swap to Illumina “for damage” the moment an Ice Dagger appears unless you are sure you can one-clip them before they touch you.

If you hold Ice Dagger

  • Respect the ~3 second arm delay after equip; the blade is not lethal until it is ready.
  • Never challenge a Firebrand head-on—your unique kill condition is turned off.
  • Ambush Linked Sword or distracted Illumina users, then swap off if a Firebrand arrives.
  • Use map corners and lava spinner paths near the Ice Dagger spawn to force panic swings.

Takeaway: Ice Dagger is a trap card; Firebrand is the answer card. Servers with active Ice Dagger pedestals make Firebrand rise in practical value even if Illumina stays “higher tier.”

Illumina vs Ghostwalker invisibility

Soft-to-hard advantage for Illumina: Sparkles reveal nearby invisible or transparent enemies (commonly cited ~30 studs). Ghostwalker becomes more transparent each KO and fully invisible at level 9.

Illumina plan

  • Hold Illumina as your detector whenever Ghostwalker is in play.
  • Do not tunnel on the first sparkle—confirm movement, then Illumina fly into a safe angle.
  • Force Ghostwalker users into tight geometry where low gravity does not help them escape horizontally.
  • Pair with Shield Sphere when exiting Locus portals so an invisible ambusher cannot delete you on spawn-out.

Ghostwalker plan

  • Avoid Illumina holders until you have space or a Windforce ally pressure.
  • Use verticality: low gravity plus lunge can leave Illumina’s sparkle range if you commit upward.
  • Farm KOs on weaker blades first; dying to Illumina resets your level investment.
  • Shadow Sphere invis does not let you swing—Ghostwalker invis still lets you fight, which is why Illumina detection matters so much.

Takeaway: Illumina is the anti-stealth toolkit of the classic roster. Ghostwalker still wins if it snowballs far from detectors.

Windforce edge control

Soft advantage: Windforce lunges shove targets far. On bridges, Ghostwalker paths, Firebrand tightropes, and Ring of Fire rims, a shove equals a void death.

Windforce plan

  • Aim for torso contacts near edges rather than center-island slugfests.
  • Accept that some fall deaths deny KO credit—use shove to reset a fight, then finish on solid ground when you need the streak number.
  • Prioritize shoving Darkheart users before they life-steal a full heal cycle.
  • Blue Locus portal routes to the Windforce tower—know the Map guide so you can re-pickup after death.

Against Windforce

  • Fight toward island interiors; never backpedal onto thin bricks.
  • Venomshank or Firebrand reach can win the “who touches first” contest before the shove lands.
  • Touchstone panic escapes beat trying to out-space a Windforce on a plank.

Takeaway: Windforce is a geography weapon. Bring it when the map is thin; leave it when you need pure DPS in open pads.

Venomshank poison pressure

Soft advantage: Poison ticks shred max-HP fractions, so Battle Armor does not “solve” Venom the way raw HP padding might suggest. A graze can kill someone who already fled.

Venomshank plan

  • Take chip, disengage, and let ticks work—especially vs armored players.
  • Use length to nick without eating Illumina lunges.
  • Remember: poison-only finishes may not award you the KO. If you need credit, secure the last hit yourself.

Against Venomshank

  • Carry a Medkit (cures poison and full heals)—see Powerups.
  • Darkheart life steal can offset ticks if you immediately hit a valid target (including forcefields).
  • Healing pads on the map are emergency resets when your Medkit is gone.
  • Do not “save” a nearly dead life by running into more Venom range.

Takeaway: Venomshank wins wars of attrition. Medkit discipline is the real counterplay, not ego trading.

Darkheart sustain

Soft advantage: 40% life steal on damage dealt, including into forcefields, turns Darkheart into a portable Medkit with a sword attached.

Darkheart plan

  • When poisoned or low, tag a forcefielded player or a distracted foe to drink health back.
  • Cave spawn under the black mountain is a natural regen loop with Shadow Sphere upstairs—but expect campers.
  • Win long messy fights; lose pure burst races to Illumina if you never land hits.

Against Darkheart

  • Burst them with Illumina before life steal cycles.
  • Windforce them off edges so they never get the heal swing.
  • Do not stand in spawn forcefields while a Darkheart farms you for free HP.
  • Venomshank can still pressure if they cannot find a heal target fast enough—pair with map control.

Takeaway: Darkheart is S-tier because mistakes are forgivable. Deny the heal swing and the sword becomes a shorter Illumina with worse mobility.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does Firebrand block Ice Dagger if it is only in my backpack?

No. Immunity applies while Firebrand is equipped. Hotbar to it when Ice Dagger users are near.

Can Illumina always see max Ghostwalker?

Illumina sparkles reveal nearby invisible foes within its detection range. Stay close enough to trigger sparkles; far-away Ghostwalkers can still approach from outside that bubble.

Should I always finish with Windforce for KOs?

Not if you need KO credit. Shove to create space, then land a confirming hit on solid ground when the streak number matters.

What cures Venomshank poison?

Medkits and healing pads clear or offset poison. Darkheart life steal can also recover HP while ticks continue if you keep dealing damage.

Is Darkheart better than Illumina in a pure 1v1?

Illumina usually wins clean burst and mobility. Darkheart wins prolonged scrapes, forcefield farming, and poisoned recoveries. Pick for the fight you are in.
